Well, flock me – Monday, 9 October

Back to the touristy stuff today. We spent the whole day herding sheep, more or less.

For fans of Shaun the Sheep, which basically means everyone, Brighton is currently very fashionable. Forget the famous pier, the ridiculous pebbly beach and the annual Pride Festival. Brighton is now the home of Shaun the Sheep sculptures, or at least it is until November.

The Shaun by the Sea Art Trail, organised by local charity Martlets, has seen 42 ewe-nique Shaun sculptures flock to the streets of Brighton & Hove (see post of 8 September). There is a map and an app (mapp?) so that you can collect the various Shaun’s. Sort of like sheep orienteering, we’ll call it shearing.

Let’s track down some sheep

We spent all day on the trail. It was an interesting way to see Brighton – not that we hadn’t seen most of it already – wandering the streets looking for Shaun sculptures.

We managed to collect 25 of the 42 sculptures. We’d need a car or another two days to get the rest, they were starting to get a bit more scattered.

They’re located in squares and other public spaces. A couple have been damaged by the usual antisocial misfits, and one painted up in a police theme was stolen, and replaced with a cardboard cutout of a … pig?! But otherwise the sculptures are respected and admired.

The whole lot will be auctioned in November, if you’re keen. You’ll need at least a ute, and a forklift, if you do bid on one and happen to win it.

We did see other things while we were chasing sheep.

Definitely not sheep
Bubbles on a large scale
I guess it’s a wooden boat, of sorts. A dugout, without the dug. An out.

And that was the day. We’ll sleep well tonight. Over 22,000 steps for the day.
