Back to France – Saturday, 30 September

To save the palaver associated with our disembarkation from Saint Malo, we booked a taxi for 7:45am, calculating that we should be there by 8am. This would be well ahead of sailing at 9:10am and even meeting the 1-hour deadline for checking bags in.

Turns out the taxi was right on time and we were there within 5 minutes. Bag check-in took another 5 minutes and then we got to stand around and twiddle our thumbs for over an hour.

Hard to tell from the photo, but the captain of the little ferry has just done a sterling job of reversing it up between the jetty and the larger ferry.

Another smooth crossing and a bit less haze than the first trip, so a bit more to see coming out and into the harbours.

Back in Saint Malo we had an hour and a half before the train was due, and we couldn’t find a taxi anyway, so we walked the 2kms back to the railway station and waited patiently.

That’s some serious sailing. I hope there’s a diagram of the rigging.
More masts and lots more rigging
Bye bye, Saint Malo

Train from Saint Malo to Rennes, then from Rennes to Paris Gare Montparnasse. Even the local line rattlers get along fairly well over here. The train from Saint Malo maintained 115 km/hr. The main line trains travel at 290-300 km/hour.

Since when do trains have truck wheels? Metro line 6 does. Do you need a train driver’s ticket, or a truck licence?

We booked a hotel near to Paris Gare de Lyon, where our train to Saint Etienne was departing from, so as to make life a little easier on Sunday morning. It was quite an effort to get from Paris Gare Montparnasse to de Lyon via the Metro, but we weren’t operating to a timetable. It’s got me beat how the trains all run so efficiently, when you see how lax everything else is done, but efficient they are.

We’re on the top floor. Fortunately there was a lift.
