This is a very large site, with a myriad of things to see. The site ranges from the Roman Pharos (lighthouse), to the medieval keep, Napoloeonic defences, WWI anti-aircraft defences and the WWII tunnel complex. Being a Sunday, we were treated to re-enactors putting on a display with the WWI AA gun.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 3000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewell.id.au\/Europe2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2310-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2250\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jewell.id.au\/Europe2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2310-2.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"size-custom\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s really, really big<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<figure style=\"width: 3000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewell.id.au\/Europe2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2333-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2250\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jewell.id.au\/Europe2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2333-1.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"size-custom\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The re-enactment went off with a bang<\/figcaption><\/figure>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWithout describing the whole thing in detail, that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 3000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewell.id.au\/Europe2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2377-0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2250\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jewell.id.au\/Europe2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2377-0.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"size-custom\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saxon church and Roman lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dover is 45 miles from Hawkhurst and the drive to\/from Dover was an interesting ramble through country lanes and small villages, with a bit of motorway thrown in.<br \/>\nMore tomorrow, Steve J.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A straight forward day with not a lot to comment on.
